Former home of Mayor LuskeFormer home of Mayor Luske
Jacques J.C.M. Luske was the mayor of Bergharen during the Second World War. Luske regularly protested against the German authorities and actively helped to protect people in hiding. During a raid, a number of people in hiding were arrested; after being tortured, they admitted that Luske had helped them go into hiding. On 6 March 1944, Luske was arrested by the Germans. He was eventually sent to Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg, where he died on 27 December 1944. Luske was 43 years old.

Mass grave of victims of the Nijmegen bombing
Mass grave of victims of the Nijmegen bombingMass grave of victims of the Nijmegen bombing
At the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Wijchen lies a mass grave of thirteen civilian victims who lost their lives during the bombing of Nijmegen on 22 February 1944. During this Allied bombing raid, nearly 800 people lost their lives and a large part of the city centre was destroyed. Most of the thirteen victims from Wijchen were on the bus at Stationsplein, waiting for the ‘all clear’ signal following the first air-raid siren.

Little Canada
Little CanadaLittle Canada
In September 1944, the war was raging through Gelderland. The Allied forces were stationed there between October 1944 and February 1945, sleeping in barracks such as those shown in the picture. When the Allied forces advanced into Germany, they left a number of these barracks behind. Tens of thousands of civilians were forced to flee because of the war. Wijchen – then home to 8,000 inhabitants and a safe haven amidst the violence – had to accommodate 6,000 displaced people in a short space of time. After the liberation, the housing shortage remained unacceptably high and the council took over a collection of Allied huts. People came to live in these eleven huts and barracks, without electricity or plumbing; water was pumped by hand. The complex soon came to be known as ‘Little Canada’. In 1955, the last resident left and the complex was demolished.

Tienakker Convent
Tienakker ConventTienakker Convent
The British headquarters here in Wijchen was located in this old convent. The monument recounts the story of the Sisters of Tienakker, who had to deal with the German Wehrmacht, patients from the Sint Jozefgesticht and refugees from Nijmegen. From the end of September 1944, it then became the British headquarters. King George VI also paid a visit to boost the morale of the troops. At the front of the entrance to the Kloosterpark stands a monument providing further information. The convent is now privately owned.

Wijchen Mill
Wijchen MillWijchen Mill
During the Second World War, the municipality of Wijchen was home to many people in hiding. These included men conscripted for the Arbeitseinsatz, Jews, Allied soldiers who had been shot, and escaped prisoners of war. Miller Minus de Kleijn would warn the whole of Wijchen of an impending raid by setting the mill’s sails to a specific position. The mill thus played a very important role in protecting the people of Wijchen and those in hiding. During the war years, the Molenberg was the highest point in the area. From this spot, the people of Wijchen witnessed, amongst other things, the bombing of Nijmegen and saw the Allies land during Operation Market Garden. On the Molenberg stands a monument detailing the full story of the Wijchen Mill during the Second World War.

Pater Sebald Lindersstraat
Pater Sebald LindersstraatPater Sebald Lindersstraat
Father Sebald Linders, a Friar Minor born in Mook, was a follower of St Francis, but not a contemporary like all the other followers of the Saint of Assisi or St Clare who had streets named after them in Alverna. Father Sebald Linders owed this honour to his work in the Resistance. The friar, who did not shy away from taking up arms when necessary, and whose main contribution lay in sheltering Jewish children, was betrayed and shot by the Germans in Vught at the age of 37. On Wednesday 9 September 2015, Father Sebald Linders will be posthumously awarded the Yad Vashem ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ honour.
