In Batenburg, a picturesque town on the banks of the river Maas, time seems to have stopped. Strategically located on the banks of the river Maas, the town has a magnificent past. The name refers to Bato, the Batavians’ forefather, who allegedly had a fortification built here. Tradition also has it that a Roman temple used to be here, but there is no proof for it. In any case Batenburg’s history dates back to the 12th century. Nearly all buildings are listed. The “Walking in Batenburg” brochure brings back to life the history of the houses, farmsteads, the mill and the imposing castle ruins. Batenburg has operated a bicycle and foot-passenger ferry service to Demen since 2007 (between May and September only). Walks available from VVV Serviceshop Wijchen, tel. (024) 6451144 or Uitbaeterij de Viersprong, tel. (0487) 541669 (closed Tues). “Het Heerlijk Veer” bicycle and foot-passenger ferry plies across the Maas between Batenburg and Demen from May to September. For a timetable go to www.uiterwaarde.nl.
