Relive history - History flows through the Nijmegen region

The Roman period is never far away in the Nijmegen region. You will find a wealth of archaeological finds dating back to the Romans and other times. In fact, Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands!

Mighty castles take you back in time to the Middle Ages. One of the oldest castles in the province of Gelderland is Batenburg, whose ruins can still be visited. Or check out Hernen Castle or Doornenburg Castle. With its Renaissance-style appearance Wijchen Castle looks younger than the rest, but once you’ve been to the castle museum you will know otherwise…

Shortly before the end of the Second World War, Operation Market Garden saw fierce battles in the area between the Rhine and the Waal rivers, nicknamed ‘The Island’ by the allied forces.
