Old St Victor’s Church
Old St Victor’s ChurchOld St Victor’s Church
Ies and Miriam Spangenthal, a Jewish couple from Amsterdam, went into hiding in the Protestant St Victor’s Church in 1943 and 1944. The couple had fled Amsterdam and found shelter in this church in Batenburg. The church verger, Hendrik van de Bovenkamp, and his wife Hermina provided them with food and clean clothes. Ies and Miriam slept on the church pews. In case of emergency, they could take refuge in a hiding place beneath the church floor, which Hendrik had built. In October 1944, following the liberation of Batenburg, the Spangenthal couple left the church after a year and a half.

Tienakker Convent
Tienakker ConventTienakker Convent
The British headquarters here in Wijchen was located in this old convent. The monument recounts the story of the Sisters of Tienakker, who had to deal with the German Wehrmacht, patients from the Sint Jozefgesticht and refugees from Nijmegen. From the end of September 1944, it then became the British headquarters. King George VI also paid a visit to boost the morale of the troops. At the front of the entrance to the Kloosterpark stands a monument providing further information. The convent is now privately owned.

Mass grave of victims of the Nijmegen bombingMass grave of victims of the Nijmegen bombing
At the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Wijchen lies a mass grave of thirteen civilian victims who lost their lives during the bombing of Nijmegen on 22 February 1944. During this Allied bombing raid, nearly 800 people lost their lives and a large part of the city centre was destroyed. Most of the thirteen victims from Wijchen were on the bus at Stationsplein, waiting for the ‘all clear’ signal following the first air-raid siren.

Wijchen Peace Monument
Wijchen Peace MonumentWijchen Peace Monument
‘To all those who gave their lives for peace, wherever in the world.’ This is the inscription on this monument, which commemorates the suffering caused by all wars. The monument was designed by Henk Scheffer, a resident of Wijchen, to mark the 40th anniversary of Wijchen’s liberation. On Saturday 8 September 1984, the Queen’s Commissioner for Gelderland, Mr De Bruijne, came to Wijchen to unveil the memorial. Commemorative events are held at the monument, including the commemoration of the liberation of Wijchen and the surrounding area on 17 September. The monument is also intended as a warning against the rise of fascism and racism. The white concrete column symbolises ‘good’. The shields, made of hot-dip galvanised steel, symbolise evil. Evil attempts to penetrate good, seeking to destroy it, but is repelled because good ultimately has greater strength.

Ammunition Crates in Wijchen
Ammunition Crates in WijchenAmmunition Crates in Wijchen
During the winter of 1944–1945, the area around Nijmegen became a major gathering point for troops and ammunition. All this was in preparation for Operation Veritable, the attack on Germany that was to begin from this area on 8 February 1945. Many people had Allied soldiers and evacuees ‘quartered’ in their homes. Wijchen, too, was full of ammunition destined for the front. The ammunition crates were lined up in long rows along the road. The Zandstraat, now known as the Kasteellaan, was one of the streets packed with these crates, as was what is now the Nieuweweg. Children would regularly get hold of items from these crates, such as bullets, air pistols and the like. They often played with these, though unfortunately not always with a happy ending.
